From a look at a distance, Richard seems to be quiet and keeps to himself away from the crowd. Most people who do not know him might think that he is a loner or arrogant snob but they are wrong about him. Richard speaks to those who are spoken to him and he is not really good with crowds, jovial and loudness are not his things. A native of Ca-elum who is a former navy officer in his homeland, Richard is a man of discipline and he is mature due to his life experiences and age. When it comes to dealing with outsiders or getting to know someone, Richard remains courteous and polite with a gentle smile across his face. Despite he knows how to fight, Richard will try peaceful resolution unless brute force is the only way to solve a problem.

Although he is lonesome and solitary, Richard does not mind when traveling with others either in a journey or a mission together. Although he is not a good singer or a musician, Richard knows any Ca-elum Navy sea shanty and plays a lute in front of a campfire. When engaging in a battle, Richard becomes focused and calm especially when fighting his enemy/opponent head on. He uses his surroundings and any objects nearby him as his advantages, Richard believes that such advantages can overcome the enemy or as a distraction which might give him a chance to deliver an attack. When the odds are against him, Richard prefers retreat rather than reckless or suicide attack. “Retreat to fight another day.” is his own motto, Richard does not see retreat as cowardice or dishonorable but a chance to live and fight another day.

Richard lacks his confidence in his own and sometimes he has doubts about his choices in life. He knows how and willing to help people but Richard does not know how to help himself. Whenever he lands himself a problem, Richard keeps it to himself and does not seek others for help unless they discover it or he doesn't have a choice but to tell them. Sometimes he loses himself deeply in thoughts, struggling to seek who he want to be. Despite being calm, Richard can be angry and violent when someone crosses his line or someone threatens him. He is relentless and brutal when it comes to a battle.

When he was a young officer in Ca-elum Navy, Richard was brash and impulsive thus always eager for glory and fame. The traits of his made him lose his ship and great numbers of sailors during his chase on a Dark Mage fugitive at Cloud Seas. Even after his resignation from the navy and self exiled from Ca-elum, that day still haunts him and sometimes it deprives him from sleep. Since after the incident at Cloud Seas, Richard develops astraphobia; he fears of lightning and thunderstorms. One single thunderclap will make him jump and cowers in fear.

• Exploring: Although he spends a decade by traveling on foot, Richard believes that there are many uncharted places around Ishgar, waiting to be found.
  
• Ships: Whenever he stops at a harbor or near a shipyard, Richard enjoys his time by viewing at the ships. Being a former navy officer of Ca-elum Navy, Richard recognizes some especially those warships from his homeland, he able to tell what kind of ship classes they are.
