    "Ghost pirates. What a joke,”

Vandrad had pulled up the job sheet once more, glaring at the piece of paper and the ludicrous words printed on it. It had been quite the shellshock to discover that the way to earn jewel in a guild was to take jobs from an all inclusive board. A literal board that just… listed out requests from people all over the land. It was so free, so wildly lacking order and design. Vandrad hated it. He was used to the procedural operations of the military; where orders were given by those above and those below were to follow them. You earned based on what rank you were, which wasn’t altogether unlike what a guild was. You were ranked into a system within the guild’s databases and whatever rank you were, you could take better paying and arguably more dangerous jobs.

That’s something Vandrad could get behind. And if he wanted to, at the very least, appear to be fully dedicated to Fairy Tail, he had to play the part. He certainly wasn’t lacking for jewel given his heritage but he hated the idea of scouring through the intricacies of transferring literal riches without anyone noticing. Easier to leave behind what he had until he had decided to shed this ridiculous foolery. But he refused to start in the dredges of the lower-tiered jobs. Repairing houses and helping with food deliveries was scoff-inducing and he’d be damned first before he was found helping a goddamn cat out of a tree.

Luckily, there had been a posting that was listed as an alliance job. Fairy Tail was cooperating with the other independent guilds, Silver Wolf and Onyx Moon, and they had formed an impressive symbiotic union. It was rare to see that among any kind of major group in this day and age. But back to the point; this job was a cooperative mission, asking for a member of Fairy Tail to join one of Silver Wolf on a challenging job. Apparently, somewhere in the Silent Glaciers, was a cave that had once been used by pirates. Now they were all dead and their spirits were haunting the cavern. The locals nearby wanted them gone – probably because several adventurous souls had journeyed into the mouth and never returned. While they claimed not to care about the treasure, Vandrad highly doubted the call of riches would keep the townspeople humble for long.

Plus the prospect of working with someone else was… annoying, to say the least. Vandrad wasn’t exactly looking to make friends while he was here. But perhaps this agent of Silver Wolf had some information worth his own personal mission. He doubted it but he also knew better than to cast aside a possibility, at least until it was proven a dried well. And so he waited at the checkpoint he had agreed to meet, stuffing the paper back into his pocket with a snort and looking towards the skyline. He’d been warned about the cold of the land so, in preparation, he had bought the first snow jacket he could find. The bright green jacket was quite the eyecatcher, with large purple letters signifying the brand. Its look and color mattered very little to the Prince; he wasn’t looking to impress anyone. He just wanted to get the job done.

Though he could hardly deny the prospect of fighting was uplifting. It had been some time since he’d been able to unleash his might.

Cunning is the art of concealing our own defects
    and discovering other peoples' weaknesses.
This was the second time that Mercury had found herself on a joint mission for a haunting, although this time she was noticeably more excited about it. The last time she’d dealt with something along this nature, she’d stumbled across an exceptionally useful artifact of demonic origins that had greatly boosted her powers. Sure, doing so had painted a rather large target on her back… but it wasn’t an entirely unwanted target. Gangting had yet to track her down, but she knew he would eventually and that knowledge kept a devious little smile on her face most days.

And ever since their little foray into that haunted castle, Mercury had done some research on the giant’s magic. It had sounded so similar to her own that she couldn’t help but wonder if perhaps what she had was slayer magic, and she just hadn’t realized it. After a few hours online -- and a friendly but admonishing conversation with the secretive Jadus -- this suspicion of hers had been confirmed. In fact, Jadus had been rather impressed with what she’d found. Supposedly it was something called a “lacrima” and it had heightened the magic that he had already bestowed on her, granting her access to powers that the demon hadn’t. It was still weird to think of herself as being a mage, given that she hadn’t even known magic existed until a few months ago, but as an engineer she was hardly going to turn her nose up at any tool, even a foreign one.

As such, when the opportunity arose to take on another job related to a haunting, the Xocili jumped on it immediately. After all, if her first haunting had been so rewarding, surely another one would. This job once again required her to be paired up with a mage from another guild, but this time it was not Dies Irae. There was a small amount of disappointment there. How wonderfully ironic would it have been to be paired up with her overly large rival again? But Mercury was a social creature so she was not remiss to meeting new people.

Getting to the glaciers had been an easy enough trip. Public transportation was able to get her to the checkpoint area ahead of schedule with relative ease. The area was quite chilly, but thankfully Mercury had gotten used to snow and freezing temperatures pretty quickly as Silver Wolf’s guild hall was located at the top of a mountain. She had plenty of warm clothes because of this.

Today, she’d selected a simple, practical outfit rather than some of her more flashy clothes, since it would not do for her to freeze to death. A plain cream colored shirt made of thick cotton was adorned over a pair of camel colored cargo pants. She had straps for days around her body that held a number of pouches and tools, and kept her clothing hugged tight to her petite frame. Over the shirt was a short camel colored jacket, and over it all she wore a forest green cloak made of soft but durable wool that kept her neck covered from the elements. Strapped to her hip was an impressively large pistol of almost alien looking design.

Since she’d arrived a bit early, Mercury made a stop at a coffee shop to get herself a nice hot cup of joe to go, and soon she was on her way to the meeting spot. There were a few people milling about and handling their daily affairs, but only one of those present really stuck out. A man with tall, spiked hair and the most impressive widow’s peak she’d ever seen stood with quite the impatient scowl on his face. The height of his hair almost seemed in compensation for his lack of height in stature. He was exactly the same height as her, and she was not very tall even by female standards. How totally opposite of her last joint venture!

She approached him with a smile that did nothing to hide the inherent mischief in her emerald eyes. “Fairy Tail?” Mercury asked him, taking a quiet sip of her coffee, the steam warming her face. Assuming he confirmed that he was with the guild and was the one she was supposed to meet, she introduced herself. “I’m Mercury, with Silver Wolf. Ready to see what all the fuss is about?” Normally she would try to chat him up to get the size of him first, but they still had to travel to the cave itself so there was plenty of time to do a little talking along the way. And it was clear by her almost dismissive tone of the topic that she didn’t really think that anything supposedly in this cave was going to pose much of a threat.

Vandrad hadn’t paid much attention to the people around him as he came through town. The scowl that always remained on his face was usually fairly good at driving people off from coming up to him. It was one that had been instilled in him from the military – a look of serious consideration for the bullshit the world possessed. It wasn’t that the man was incapable of smiling, though he was oft known for a quick and wicked smirk over anything else. He just much preferred to be in a state where no one disturbed him. Already he felt he had made a poor choice by joining a guild that had such… friendly looking faces. For a business that incorporated mercenaries as members, Fairy Tail seemed just as happy-go-lucky as it had before. Then again, maybe that was just how it appeared on the outside.

The outward mention of his guild caught his attention, his gaze shifting to the side to meet the eyes of the one that had approached him. A female of similar height though certainly not of weight or muscular build – not that that mattered when one could wield magic. With hair the color of a pretty flower one might find in a garden and eyes like the ocean on a sunny day. A pretty woman by any standards. He scoffed softly and turned to face her. "Vandrad. Clearly you’ve already figured out my guild. Let’s get moving then.” If she had been dismissive with the topic, the Prince seemed dismissing of the entire operation. With a turn of his heels, he began to walk in the direction of the cave – or so they had been told.

Vandrad was not a conversationalist. His mother and her family were great of chatting up others, probably because that was half of what a Duchess and her kin were meant to do. Chat idly about things they didn’t really care about but pretend they did. The Prince was never good at it, even in his later years now. He had been a straight shooter and when he had needed to talk to someone, he went out of his way to do so. But he never wasted time on flowery words or casual chitchat about the weather or who was running around the bushes with who. The military was better about that but not much – he found not a lot of people shared his similar disposition. It didn’t bother him either; he imagined most people would have a hard time simply just walking towards an objective in complete silence. Vandrad would not.

But there was something to be gained here. By the slight feel of her magic power, this Mercury was strong. Not beyond the outreaches of himself, of course – meeting some of Fairy Tail’s wizards had made the Prince aware of just how underpowered he was in the grand scheme of things. But one thing he had learned was that someone with a decent amount of strength from a guild surely had some knowledge of the world around them. That or they were terrible lucky. In the spirit of finding out more about Fiore and not necessarily wanting to know more about Mercury herself, Vandrad convinced himself he needed to converse with her… as minimally as possible.

"How long have you been with Silver Wolf?” He asked bluntly, barely turning to acknowledge her as he continue forward. "Long enough to learn some things about the lay of the land?” He did his best to sound more… interested in her history rather than the base information that she could pass on. But for a man that wasn’t great at acting, he probably failed horribly.

Well, he certainly wasn’t the chatty type. Not that it was hard to overlook that simply from the unapproachable way he carried himself. Mercury was very good at reading people. It was a skill she prided herself on. However, even an infant could have assessed that this man was exceptionally standoffish even before he started talking. He barely deigned himself to look at her before giving the bare minimum of a greeting and walking off, expecting her to follow. Most people would have surely been put off by his brisk and cold mannerisms, but Mercury was not most people. As he walked away, she watched him briefly and only one thought entered her mind.

    Excellent. A challenge.

With a grin, she followed him, easily catching up. Her head was already racing with all the possibilities of driving him crazy. Did she chat his ear off and watch him implode into a ball of rage? Did she fight fire with fire and treat him with even more blatant disrespect to see if he could be goaded into a pissing match? Maybe she simply acted for all the world like he was the kindest human being on the planet, responding to his harsh behaviors with over flowered kindness and sensitivity? The possibilities were truly endless, and honestly she didn’t know where to start.

Thankfully, she had plenty of time to think about it as she drank her coffee, which was more important to drink while it was still hot. Mercury was in the middle of deciding the best way to crack his hard exterior when Vandrad utterly shocked her by attempting to break the ice himself. It was a lackluster attempt to say the least, but an attempt nonetheless. She stared at him openly with a curious expression, entertainment dancing through her eyes as she casually sipped from her cup while looking at him. She said nothing for a long couple seconds. If he was so disinterested in being social -- and clearly he was -- why the forced attempt to act so?

The only explanation she could come up with was that he wanted something and felt that he needed to honor certain social traditions to get it, even if they were honored begrudgingly. She grinned at him. “Well, and here I was thinking that you were going to give me the cold shoulder this whole trip. I just lost a bet to myself.” Finally, she looked away from him and faced forward once more, seemingly unperturbed by his gruffness. “I’ve only been a member for a few months, though they have been very studiously spent. I’m not from Fiore, but I’ve made it a point to learn as much as I can about it. But there's something more specific you’re interested in, isn't there?”

Mercury flashed him an impish smirk. “Save us both the pain of you faking effort at small talk. What do you actually want to know? If I have answers, I’ll give them to you. No tedious pleasantries required.”

If Vandrad really put his mind to it, he could probably be quite the people reader. Despite his penchant to charge into situations like a bull with his head down, he was still quite good at devising strategies. And creating such schemes was entirely based on figuring out a person and what made them tick. In a combat situation, the Prince could read through a person’s finest movements and discover weaknesses, traits that brought them down and made them accessible. It was an aspect that should have been easily translatable and yet, it was never for a lack of effort. It was simply a lack of interest. So while Mercury clearly had him figured out and was plotting on how to most twist him around her finger, he simply didn’t give a damn.

But there was a purpose to communicating with her during their trek; information. So he put forth his questions in an attempt to open a line of inquiry – to create a dialogue where he could get some answers for his own questions. It wasn’t meant to get to know her or anything, simply an ends to a means. Yet even he wasn’t blind enough to people not to notice when she didn’t answer right away, cocking his head back to look at her. And he didn’t miss the amusement she so clearly got from the entire situation. He made a sound that was a mixture of a scoff and a grunt, now just annoyed he had even bothered. Just when it seemed she was more interested in ignoring the question, she spoke up; remarking about the fact that he was going to simply ignore her the entire trip. "Tsk. You must be so pleased with yourself,” he grumbled, with as much condescension as one could muster.

Even that didn’t seem to rattle her as she continued, giving him a quick rundown of her time. And her answer provided less than a fruitful discovery. She wasn’t even from Fiore and she’d only been apart of her guild for a few months. Utterly useless, he commented to himself with a shake of his head and another scoff. But she had picked up on the intent of his questions, realizing that he was digging for something deeper. Returning to her amusement, she called him out on his weak attempt at trying to prove civil and asked him directly what he was looking for. He stopped and turned enough to look at her over his shoulder, a flash of a deeper annoyance resonating in his eyes. It was a look that a royal would give to someone who dared treat them like a commoner.

But that’s what he was pretending to be, wasn’t it? This was exactly what his mother would do in this situation; demand respect and badger the woman into submission. How easily he had forgotten that those machinations and feelings were bred into him from birth. Instantly his anger faded into something like understanding. With an almost tired sigh, he turned to face her fully, his arms crossing over his chest. "I’m looking for a man by the name of Gren Ragnos. Official records state that he’s dead but there’s several sightings and rumors about him lately that I’m unwilling to believe whatever passes as a government here. Supposedly he was a Rune Knight during his years of operation, some forty years ago or so.”

As much as he hated to admit it – and he would never do it out loud – this woman was a straight shooter. Even if she took a morbid humor out of the situation, she had chosen to simply ask him straightforward about his inquiries rather than to tease and test him. She’d earned a modicum of his respect… or at least enough for him to shoot straight back at her, for now.

“I am a little, yeah,” Mercury admitted to him with a grin when he scoffed at the amusement she took over their exchange. He had the condescension in his voice down pat, his mocking words dripping with absolute ire, but she didn’t appear to be in the least bit offended.

Her ability to cut down to the heart and intent of his pathetic attempts at being cordial got an even bigger reaction out of him. He actually stopped walking, fixing a black eyed gaze on her so he could just glare at her with all the derision a single person could possibly muster. Mercury didn’t exactly have a lot of exposure to royalty, particularly not of this world, so she could not deduce the history behind the well practiced look. And frankly, even if she could she probably wouldn’t have treated him any differently. But she stopped alongside him, holding his eye contact without waver and patiently waiting for him to decide the proper way to react to her.

For a couple seconds she thought he was going to explode on her. Once again, however, he discarded her expectations and chose instead to relax, turning to face her full on. A single, lavender colored brow raised in interest at this change in demeanor, and she resisted the urge to comment on it. There was no sense losing whatever progress was being made here. She listened attentively as he explained what he was really interested in: information or whereabouts related to one individual known as Gren Ragnos, who used to be a Rune Knight. According to him, official records marked him as dead but he had heard rumors that claimed otherwise. He even went so far as to insult Fiore’s established government. How curious.

“Hmm,” she hummed thoughtfully. “I’ve never heard the name myself, though ‘Ragnos’ sounds familiar. Hold this.” Mercury handed him her coffee with one hand while she used the other to pull a sizable tablet out of one of her pouches. Holding the device so he could see it clearly with her, she typed away on the screen with baffling speed and searched the name he’d mentioned to see what articles popped up.

“Let’s see… here’s an obituary. Some military accomplishments… Ah yes, of course!” Mercury clicked on an article to open it in full. “I knew that last name was familiar from somewhere. The current director of the Rune Knights is Mythal Ragnos, the most recently appointed of the four Gods of Ishgar. As director, he’s second in command of the entire Rune Knight army and answers only to Serilda Sinclair, the field marshal. She’s also one of the four Gods of Ishgar.”

Her curiosity had taken hold, and now that she was in research mode she was in deep. Another link caught her attention and she clicked on it. “Not sure if he’s connected to your Gren or not. How common of a surname is Ragnos? I’d have to do some real digging to see if I could find anything of interest about where he comes from. Most of these are bringing stuff up more about Serilda than him. Looks like she’s a duchess or something. Oh, and they’re recently engaged? That’s spicy.”

Well she certainly was fucking smug. There was something about her that equally annoyed him and intrigued him. A morbid curiosity about her sensibilities and the amusement she took out of driving him up a wall. It didn't quite occur to him how similar it was to how he treated opponents in battle as he glared at her grinning, proud face. Most people at least had the wherewithal to back off once they realized they had ruffled his feathers. Not her though -- was it confidence in her strength? Or perhaps something else. He couldn't put his finger on it, though in truth he cared very little. At least, he convinced himself that was the case.

He had no qualms about confronting her though. When she pressed her luck just a bit too far, he had halted their trek to turn and address her with a stern stare. But it was coming from the wrong place at the time; a place of superiority based on his heritage. And he couldn't afford to go around acting better than people here for several seasons. The most pressing example was the fact that he was keeping his upbringing and name a secret so he could operate with hindrances. The second was that, frankly, his royal line would mean very little to people in a different nation. It may earn him a modicum of respect in allied nations but Fiore was not that. It was better for his situation that he remain tight lipped on everything… but he couldn't do that if he metaphorically grabbed for his royal scepter everytime he was treated with disrespect.

So he'd reigned himself in. Vandrad still didn't quite enjoy the pleasure she took out of the situation but she was shooting straight with him. He may as well attack the subject straight on rather than deny or dance around. His explanation earned a silent but attentive audience until he finished. She admitted she'd never heard the first name, though the surname sparked some familiarity. Before he could ask further, she was pushing her coffee into his hands without asking and pulling out a device from her pouch. "What the…? He complained as he haphazardly took the cup. He may have complained further, even tossed the drink aside, if she hadn't turned the screen so he could see her search as well.

She found some of the obvious information he'd come across himself about Gren. But she followed the trail further, focusing on the modern rendition of the Rune Knights and their leaders. That's where she found a man bearing the same last name -- a Mythal Ragnos. Highly regarded as one of the strongest mages in Fiore, the picture attached to the article presented a man who looked like he'd rather be anywhere else. Vandrad squinted, studying the image of the man bearing the same surname as his birth father. He didn't see much in terms of familial resemblance; he'd seen a few pictures of Gren in his research to at least see the relation between himself and the former Rune Knight. At least this Mythal had the family scowl down pat. Maybe it was a cousin or distant relation?

Mercury continued to dig, following the trail to another leader of the Rune Knights; Serilda Sinclair. A pretty woman who, even at first glance, carried a regal air about her. As his partner dove further, she revealed that most mentions of Mythal focused more on Serilda, though there was an interesting tidbit about them being engaged. Romantically entwined with a duchess -- apparently the Ragnos men had a taste for royal women.

Whatever the case, it was more breadcrumbs to follow. He somehow managed to peel his eyes off the screen long enough to realize she had asked him a question. "No idea. But this Mythal might be a nephew or cousin. And running the Rune Knights…" The circumstances were so similar and ironic that they couldn't just be happenstance. He pulled back slightly, his mind bubbling and brewing with all the new information. It took him a moment to realize that, despite his crassness, she had still helped him out. She'd provided more information than even he was able to find on his own. "You've proven to be an adequate source of assistance in this. I… uh… appreciate your efforts." That was good -- for someone that hasn't ever really had to thank a person for help, that sounded pretty damn good if he did say so himself. "Now let's get back on track." And with that, he started up once again in the direction of the cave.

If she knew that he was bothered by her casually depositing her drink into his hands, she didn’t show it. He had a moment of indignation before realizing that she was in the process of actually being accomodating to what he wanted and seemed to decide that it was better to just let the moment go rather than make a scene out of it. The things she was pulling up on her tablet interested him far more, it seemed.

What was really interesting to her, however, was the article she had briefly skimmed past of Gren’s obituary. It had included a picture of the man. Take away his facial hair, and he may as well have been an older copy of Vandrad. The two were practically identical, and while her outward expression didn’t show it, that tiny tidbit of information had her mind racing at digital speeds to calculate all the possible scenarios and pick out the most likely one.

It seemed he didn’t know how common the surname was, but from the look on his face even this little bit of information she’d gleaned for him was more than he’d had before their little chat. After a moment of contemplation and what sounded like a genuine, if strained, attempt at gratitude, he thanked her for her help and suggested they continue on. “My pleasure,” she told him with a knowing smirk, keeping up with his stride to walk beside him as she tucked her tablet away once more.

Once her hands were free, she gently plucked her coffee back, offering only a rebellious wink if he shot her any kind of glare over it. After that, she was content to let him stew in silence for the rest of the trip. He was probably busy processing the details she’d just passed along to him, and she intended on using that time in patience to let him drop his guard and forget about her for a bit. Besides, it was a lovely walk to the cave, which was located along a beach. It was a beautiful sight to adorn this frozen wasteland, the shores of which were covered in uniquely frozen foam and sand.

Before long, they reached the cave which was well out of sight of the town they had left a while back. Mercury had long since finished her coffee. She stepped inside the cave where the light from the sun filtered inside enough to give decent illumination. The entrance was open enough, but bare of what anyone might consider hoards of pirate treasure. Instead, it seemed that there was a tunnel that lead further inside, into what was surely a much deeper set of caves and darkness. “Well, this looks cozy,” she remarked in good humor.

Mercury withdrew what appeared to be a set of curious looking marble sized beads and tossed them into the air above her. Immediately, they began to hover around them and glow, emitting more than enough light for the two of them to see clearly for several meters in front of them. In all truth, she probably could have seen inside the cave just fine without the lights by switching her vision to night mode, but Vandrad wasn’t the only one pretending to be something that he wasn’t. Better for her to appear as human as possible.

She gave him a grin and pulled out her peculiar looking pistol, holding it up as if to silently indicate that she was ready to venture further in whenever he was. They had been walking through the caves for only a minute or so before she spoke up again. “So. How long have you been looking for your father?” She asked the question with such ease, such casual certainty, that if Vandrad wasn’t fully paying attention to her he might have forgotten that he’d never actually said that Gren was his dad. She was curious to see what all he may or may not say before remembering that he’d been mum on that particular detail earlier.

Vandrad had a lot to process, now that she’d opened up entirely new avenues for him. He had started to walk with her coffee still in his hand and only just realized it was there when she plucked it from him, his narrowed gaze earning him a cheeky wink. This woman was something else, alright. She’d only been in Fiore for a few months and yet she seemed more than comfortable within the nation’s limits. There was also something just… off about her. He couldn’t put a finger on it but the way her magical power felt was different than he got from most other beings. He brooded on her existence for only a few moments longer before he mentally changed the subject, realizing that focusing on her was silly, at best.

No, as they walked along in complete silence, his mind was a chorus of thoughts and considerations. Who was this Mythal Ragnos to him? Was it entirely possible that he was another son of Gren’s? Based on the picture he had seen, he highly doubted it. Unless he had inherited the looks from whatever swine Gren had laid after the Duchess. But if there was a living Ragnos, considering he couldn’t count Gren among that list until he heard more viable proof, then it was possible this Mythal may have more answers for him. But how did he approach that? It seemed foolish to simply march into the Rune Knight headquarters and demand to see their Director. And it would be completely out of left field for him if he got even that far to drop the bomb that he was also a Ragnos and had been sired in a one night affair between the former Knight and the Duchess. It’d be one thing if Mythal was a member of some other guild but apart of the military? It would probably come off as a ruse… or at least that’s how Vandrad would view it.

He continued to walk in a thoughtful trance along the beach with her, his boots kicking icy sand and frozen sea foam alike. Before long, the darkening of his vision broke him from his inner therapy and his eyes twisted up to glance at the towering cave mouth that bore down on them. The ring of light that managed to pierce the cave’s darkness acted almost as a stage for them as they walked inside, standing between vision and blindness. She remarked about it being cozy and the only reply he made was to grunt through his nose softly. He was a few seconds away from activating his own magic when a curious set of beads were tossed into the air by the Silver Wolf wizard. The devices activated and hung in the air, beams of light shredding through the dark and illuminating their way. The tunnel that led deeper into the caves, almost hidden by the shadows, was now fully in view. He glanced over at the marbles for a moment, then at her and gave a solid nod, showing his approval of the machines.

They continued their way inwards, passing through the entryway to the tunnel and traversing deeper inside. Their footsteps echoed down the hallway of jagged stone and seemed to be the only sound that would reverberate at the moment. That was, until she spoke up again and asked him quite brazenly how long he had been looking for his father. His feet stopped instantly, mid-step forward. He continued to stare forward for a minute before he turned on his heel, his eyes focusing on hers. Slowly he approached her, stopping only when his face was mere inches away from hers. "Do not assume to know what my intentions are, woman. My goals are my own, my aims are my own. Whether Gren Ragnos carries some familial connection or is a sack of useless magic to me does not matter to you. So do yourself a favor and don’t meddle where you don’t belong.” It was something he couldn’t let go of; the absolute gall of her to just assume who Gren was to him. Accurate or not, her question was reaching and he wasn’t caught up in his own world enough to forget what he had and hadn’t mentioned to her. He let his gaze linger a beat longer before it flickered away from hers, noticing something else. A shadow just beyond rim of light provided by her toys. His arm swiftly came up and unleashed a blast of magic; a straight beam that illuminated the entirety of the tunnel they were in. The reindeer didn’t even have time to move before it was completely vaporized by his spell.

Vandrad let out a snort from his nostrils as he stepped away from her, turning back in the direction they had started on and continuing to walk. But there was a more distinct purpose to his footfalls now.

    Oh, she'd touched a nerve.

Her prying question jarred him so hard that practically screeched to a halt as they walked. Mercury could only stand there in anticipation as he took a moment to gather himself for the storm he was about to deliver. Slowly, Vandrad wheeled on her and approached until their faces were well within kissing range. His anger truly was something to behold. A part of her legitimately wondered if this would be the time where she’d finally pushed someone too far, but the larger part was just excited by what was going down. In fact, she was pretty surprised that he didn't make any attempts to lay is hands on her in any sort of aggressive fashion.

As he rather sternly informed her to mind her own business -- while not, she noted, denying her assumption -- she calmly held his gaze with that pertinent little smirk that seemed to be permanently plastered to her face. In fact, from the moment he referred to her as “woman” she couldn’t help but be just the tiniest bit aroused by how mad he was at her just now. Still, he made it quite clear that he wanted her to stay out of his business. And then he proceeded to take his anger out on a reindeer that had been in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Not once during his display of power did she look or back away from him, her emerald gaze remaining as teasing and playful as ever. “No one ever gets what they want without a bit of meddling in all the wrong places,” Mercury told him lightly, “But sure thing, killer. You got secrets. I can respect that. Can’t say it won’t be a struggle, though. You’re pretty sexy when you’re angry, gotta admit.”

She followed up behind him once more, taking a glance down at his back side for the hell of it while he was facing away from her. Though most of his body was covered by the large, almost obnoxiously neon green jacket he wore, there was no mistaking the corded muscles of his calves and thighs beneath the skin tight leggings he was wearing, She could only imagine how firm his buttocks were if the rest of him followed suit. Ah, well.

They hadn’t walked for much longer before something caught her attention. A silent radar beeped in her head, alerting her to the presence of a toxin in the air. A strange, musky odor tickled her nose, which had grown a dozen times more sensitive since Jadus had granted her his powers. “You smell that?” she asked him, looking around. Her eyes fell on a patch of peculiar moss growing on a wall.

Pulling her cloak up to cover her mouth and nose, she used her free hand to withdraw a new device. This one was similar to her tablet, but much smaller and a bit thicker. She held it up toward the moss and a little latch opened on the front of the machine, where a small rod shot out and clipped off a piece of the stuff, yanking it back inside the device. After just a few seconds of calculations, it beeped and alerted her to the results. “Whatever this stuff is, it’s poisonous,” she told him. She pointed to a few bulbous looking growths on the patch. “Those probably burst under agitation and release a much more lethal quantity of spores into the air. Not sure what your resistances are like, but we should be fine as long as we don’t trigger them.”

Her scanners picked up something else, and she peered further down the cavern just beyond where the lights were currently hovering. A few steps was all it took to uncover a few bodies that weren’t entirely decomposed yet. From the clothing that sat on their half rotten corpses, they appeared to have been some of the pirates whose ghosts were now supposedly haunting this cave. The bodies themselves were positioned such that they looked as though they had died rather agonizing deaths, slumped and curled in fetal position with many of them appearing to have been clutching their chests. On the wall nearest them was a much larger patch of moss, and there was even some of it growing on the bodies as well.

“Yeah, I’m gonna stick with the theory of ‘triggering is bad’.”

If she didn’t have an internal monitoring system that could alert her to things like the slightest deviance in temperature, she may have been caught totally by surprise with what happened next. As it was, she still barely had time to process what was happening before she reacted. A cold spot seemed to develop near her -- impressive, given the already chilly location -- and as she turned to look a bonafide ghost appeared faster than a blink. It came at her at a full charge, hands stretched forward as if to reach for her neck, it’s mouth open in a fully audible roar that reverberated off the cavern to assault her sensitive ears.

Before it could get close enough to actually touch her, she lifted Mercy and shot the ghost right between the eyes. A bolt of purple energy zapped its way out of the barrel of the pistol and dispersed into the spectral figure, its ethereal form rippling with what appeared to be hundreds of tiny currents of electricity. The ghost burst into a cloud of glowing light that wooshed past her like a small breeze before disappearing before it could even reach the ground.

Though Vandrad might not have been all that quick on the uptake when it came to reading people, a man of his military training could not have missed even the slightest detail in her swift and precise resolution of the ghost attack. She had reacted out of well honed instinct, and had aimed a deadly shot without hardly taking the time to aim. Her stance was firm and practiced, betraying that despite how unassumingly she presented herself, she’d had military training. harsh military training.

Once, she was certain there wasn’t going to be a subsequent attack, she lowered her weapon and returned at ease to shoot him a toothy, almost wolfish grin. “Smells like payday.”

She claimed to respect his secrets but anyone with a bit of decency would have picked up on the fact that his not mentioning any connection to Gren as a father figure meant he didn’t want to discuss it. She admitted that it would be tough, as well as throwing in a useless comment about him being attractive when he got angry. Vandrad didn’t pay it – or her – any more mind than he already had. He’d said what he had wanted and if she stuck by her word, then all would be fine, supposedly. A reindeer had lost its life in his anger but then again, he would have annihilated the creature whether his nerves had been flared or not. He’d seen something moving in the darkness and if this cave was as haunted as they claimed, it was better to shoot first and ask questions never. His display just happened to be driven by the fact that this insufferable woman felt the need to stare at him with amused, almost glittering eyes and a smirk that showed no sign of resting. It didn’t matter now anyways; his focus was back on the mission.

He continued to stalk forward, his eyes heavily drawn forward as he glanced about the cavern walls for signs of anything. But it was her that suddenly spoke up, asking if he smelled something strange. Curiously he slowed his gait, his nose inhaling several times to suck in whatever she was talking about. There was some kind of strange aroma in the air that didn’t smell good. In fact, it smelled downright wrong. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed her pulling up her cloak to cover her face and he did the same with his jacket. He watched as she came forward and marched towards a patch of moss that was growing on the wall. A new device was in her hand and as he observed, it opened up and snipped off a piece of the growth, pulling it back in for a quick analysis. A few seconds later and it signaled to her exactly what she had figured in the first place – poisonous spores. She explained quickly that the growths most likely burst under duress and released a truly deadly poison. So long as they didn’t linger, she hypothesized that they would be fine.

And yet she moved forward cautiously, as if she had picked up on something else. He followed her closely, now a bit curious himself to her sudden superior senses. As the light filled up more of the tunnel, they found themselves staring at several bodies that were in the later stages of decay. Based on their outfits, they seemed to be part of the pirates that supposedly haunted this cave. And they certainly looked like they had died quite the painful deaths, most likely from agitating the spores. In fact, they had growths on their forms that were very much like the ones in the moss. She was right – best to leave the poisonous spores as they are.

What happened next was quick that if either one of them had been without training, they might have missed it. As it was, Vandrad was not nearly quickly enough to engage his magic to prevent the ghost from assaulting Mercury. It had come right out of the air, spawning out the cold spot that had swiftly developed right next to them. Its scream had echoed down the tunnel they had come, nearly shaking the entirety of the cavern they were in. But before it could get to her, the Silver Wolf wizard ripped her weapon up and looses a blast from its end. What had appeared as a sword at first was revealed to have some kind of firing mechanism and as the bolt of purple magic struck the ghost, it was overtaken by the electric current stored within the blast. A flash of light and then the remains of the creature soared past her, fading away before it even touched the stony surface.

Now his interest in her peaked. She’d shown signs of wit and intelligence but they were all overtaken by her carefree attitude. But the way she had moved, the way her arm had lifted the weapon and managed to land a single precise shot without much focus… that wasn’t something a normal, everyday wizard could just do. She’d planted herself the minute she noticed the threat, creating a solid foundation so that her stance was steady and her aim was true. He recognized it because it was something that had been drilled into him, something he had drilled into his subordinates. She was combat ready in a split second and that meant that her training wasn’t just casual practice. She’d gone through the hardest, most rigorous development a person could go through – the military.

Within a literal snap she was back at ease, giving him a grin and making light of the situation. His pupils danced from side to side gently as he looked at her, studying her almost too intimately to mention. He may have commented on it, perhaps, if it weren’t for the sound of the air moving just down the tunnel. He moved past her quickly, his steps gaining traction as he heard more movement upon the wind. He rounded a corner to find an opening; a small cavern that almost seemed like a resting place between paths. More bodies littered the walls but these ones looked like they had been struck down in a battle. A few were dressed differently from the others and were in more recent parts of decomposition. Probably the villagers.

But that wasn’t what was intriguing. It was the appearance of several more ghosts in the air above the corpses. Each one forming into fine, ethereal detail and slowly turning towards the Prince as he stood in the opening of the tunnel. It was a sight that would terrify most people, even in dreams.

And yet, Vandrad’s mouth begun to pull back into a smirk. A wicked, almost excited smirk. "It’s about time,” he growled as he reached down, tugging open his jacket and throwing it away from him. His muscles flexed underneath his jumpsuit, his hands tightening into fists as the ghosts began to float towards him, their cries beginning to rise out of their long-dead throats. But their progress forward slowed as the entirety of the cave began to shake and pebbles that laid upon the cavern’s floor started to float up into the air. Vandrad’s body began to glow – a yellow film that highlighted his entire form. With one last yell he pushed himself into Empowerment, light shooting out from him in all directions. As it faded, the Prince was revealed to have changed. His once black hair was now a strong gold, sharp tufts of follicles seemingly frozen upwards. His eyes, once dark and almost emotionless, were a vibrant teal that danced with anticipation.

The ghosts had frozen in their places in the air, causing a throaty chuckle to come from Vandrad. "What? Do ghosts feel fear?” He mocked them as his smirk set in deeper. Before any of them could think to answer, the Prince shot forward, his energy carrying him through the air in flight. One might have thought it was foolish to throw a punch at an ethereal being and yet, those same unbelievers would equally as shocked when Vandrad’s fist hit the first ghost’s face true and sent it soaring into the wall, evaporating against the stone. He spun around and loose a blast into another, the beam dissolving the spirit’s face and causing the body to crumble. One of the other ghosts rushed in at him but before it could touch him, Vandrad’s hand snapped out and grabbed it by the throat. The gasping, sputtering sound coming from the specter’s mouth brought another chuckle from the Prince as he squeezed the neck tighter.

His head turned on a swivel towards the entryway, towards Mercury. Unlike the stoic, grumpy attitude he had carried nearly the entire time they’d known one another, he almost seemed playful now. "Come now, woman,” he called out to her as his fingers continued to press into the spirit’s throat. A beat later and his hand and closed into a fist, causing the ghost to dissolve around his outstretched arm. "No need for me to have all the fun.”

It was his turn to stare at her, this time with scrutiny. His dark eyes searched her and while she said nothing she raised a lavender brow in his direction. Whatever was going on in his mind, however, he didn’t have much time to think about it as there was a shift in the air. The direction of the draft floating through the tunnels changed, if slightly, and it was enough to alert them that there was more potential danger ahead. He raced ahead to tackle the thread, Mercury following after, and what laid beyond was an even more gruesome sight.

Or at least, it would have been to anyone less desensitized than either of them seemed to be. There was another array of bodies, though these appeared decidedly less pirate like in nature. Floating above them was a whole gaggle of ghosts, who turned toward Vandrad with as much ill intent as the last one they’d seen mere moments ago. Mercury was getting ready to help engage him in battle, once more lifting her pistol, when he caught her attention with some impressively flashy behavior.

Vandrad ripped off his giant jacket, revealing himself to be an absolutely solid unit of manhood. She honestly wasn’t sure what it was about signing on for haunted jobs and running into men bulging with muscles, but it was a trend she certainly wasn’t going to complain about. Since he was otherwise preoccupied, Mercury took a moment to confirm that his ass was, in fact, quite taut. There was the most wicked grin on his face and frankly she was so intrigued by the whole display that she just decided it was better to sit back and let him do his thing unimpeded.

And that was exactly what she did. Leaning against a moss free section of wall, she simply watched in a mixture of morbid curiosity and titillation as his power exploded from him. It was like he had charged himself up, power radiating off of him to the point where it actually caused his physical appearance to change. His hair turned a bright golden yellow, his eyes as green as her own, with a fiery aura dancing around him that lit the cavern even more brightly than her orbs had. And she, content to simply soak in the view, did little more than draw a small lollipop out of a pocket, depositing the wrapper on the ground and suckling idly on the candy as she watched.

It was impressive that he could actually punch these ghosts, to say the least. Her computerized brain ran all sorts of calculations as she analyzed his skills. He clearly had gone through some pretty rigorous training in his life, and it was interesting to note that while he had been a scowling bowl of black mascara and punk rock music the entire trip up until this point, he was having the time of his life now. Even the ghosts were having second thoughts, which was just plain silly. They were already dead! “Ha!” she chortled as he taunted them mercilessly.

All in all, his magic was a fine display, particularly to someone like herself for whom power the likes of which Earthland considered the norm was still a novelty to her. He could launch blasts of pure energy from his hands, which was especially intriguing. She was familiar with similar ranged attacks, of course, but through the use of a medium like her gun. Or even her own body, which was actually mechanical in nature. But it was fascinating to see it coming from a being of pure flesh and bone.

He caught one of the ghosts in his hand, tightening it around the specter’s neck like a vice. As he strangled the the thing, Vandrad turned to her with a devilish expression and inquired as to if she was going to let him have all the fun. What he would see when he turned was her head cocked to the side as she checked out his ass a bit more studiously, the delicate fingers of one hand holding the sucker in her mouth. She blinked at him as he addressed her. “Right, sorry. I was enjoying the show.”

Smirking at him from around the treat in her mouth, she stopped lounging against the wall and hopped in, shooting blast after blast from Mercy to incinerate the creatures. Mercury whooped and hollered her enjoyment of the chaos while the two of them beat down ghost after ghost until they were gone. “Now that’s the fuckin’ spirit,” she told him with a grin as she moved to continue deeper into the caves. Giving him a shameless glance over while she walked by him, Mercury said, “That’s a good look for you, Vandaddy. You should strut that considerable bulk of yours around more often.”

With a wink, she moved along and sashayed her way into the next tunnel. Once again, they walked for a bit without much resistance, but something itched inside of her. It was her magic trying to tell her something, though she was still learning to understand it. A metallic scent reached her nose and she sniffed the air a couple of times. Was she smelling gold? They must have been getting close to where the bulk of the pirate horde -- and their treasure -- was.

Sure enough, they eventually reached an immense cavern that was utterly jam packed with enough gold and jewels to allow a ship full of pirates to live in luxury. Mercury couldn’t help but whistle at the sight, the sound echoing off the ceiling of the cavern. There were coins, necklaces, swords, tableware… literal mountains of gold and steel. It smelled pretty delicious too, but before she could even consider trying to take a bite out of something -- a skill she’d only recently learned she had -- something else caught her attention.

There were a number of small bulbs floating around the room. They felt almost like large fireflies. The sight was actually pretty breathtaking, something that Mercury didn’t often stop long enough to care about. Still, the scientist in her was drawn to this strange phenomenon. What were these things? Were they plant based? Insects? Were they even sentient? It seemed like the kind of thing the rest of the Pack would be interested in studying.

Wandering over to one, she peered at it curiously. It didn’t seem to have any shape that she could discern. Mercury blew on it gently to watch it float, and was surprised when the bulb turned red mere seconds after being disturned. That, in turn, set off a chain reaction as the rest of the floating lights in the room also turned a deep, ominous shade of crimson. “I don’t think our fun’s over quite yet,” she told her partner, and sure enough the bulbs began to twist and warp and grow until they took on the forms of a few dozen pirates.

Unlike the one she’d killed earlier, these were armed with deadly looking swords. Their presence felt stronger too, much more than the last group they’d fought. They held their weapons with expert skill, rushing to swarm the pair. To keep them from being overwhelmed, Mercury adjusted the settings on her pistol and shot a massive concussive round that rocked the entire cavern, causing even the ghosts to stumble backward and the treasure to jingle as it loosened from its piles.

Adjusting her settings again, she tossed him a smirk over her shoulder. “Person with the higher kill count wins?”

Now this is where Vandrad came alive. It had taken a long time for the Prince to discover where he truly felt comfortable in his skin. Even now he could remember it; the thrill that had rushed through his veins as he charged into his first battle. Other soldiers were crying, terrified of engaging the enemy and possibly dying. But the excitement was so vibrant in the young Vandrad that he was practically shaking with anticipation. It was then that he had learned that he was born for war, bred for the heat of battle. He would never feel as comfortable in the normalcy of mundane life after experiencing the adrenaline and soul awakening upon the fields of carnage.

His humor, as dark and edgy as it was, came out in droves when he felt like he was back in his own skin. Mocking enemies, watching as the fear threatened to overtake their very souls when his words came to their ears in playful, sinister tones – it was what he needed after she had done a great job of pushing his buttons. But all of that had almost completely been forgotten in light of the new battle they had engaged in, so much so that he was even willing to invite her to join him. She had apparently been distracted; her eyes wandering over his rear while she absentmindedly slurped on a lollipop that she had retrieved from wherever. But it didn’t take her long after her initial pause to leap right into the fray, brandishing her pistol and loosing it at ghosts. Even Vandrad couldn’t help but grin just a little as he zipped from place to place, planting punches and kicks into ghosts and doing them the favor of actually burying them within the stone.

As the battle wound down and the ghosts had all faded away, Vandrad took a deep inhale through his nostrils, relishing in the feeling of fresh battle. As his transformation quite literally flickered off of him, leaving back in his base form, Mercury remarked about his newly discovered attitude. He watched her as she walked by, her eyes wandering over his form once again and offering him some complimentary insight. "Enjoy the view then. That’s all you’ll ever get,” he shot back, though his tone wasn’t as harsh as it had been before. In fact, it almost seemed… playful. Nonetheless, he walked over to retrieve his jacket, tossing it over his shoulder and following after her. Had she said… Vandaddy?

Perhaps it was the newfound excitement that had lifted his mood but as she walked in front of him, the Prince couldn’t help but take a gander at her backside as her hips swung from side to side. He’d observed that she was attractive but he was actually taking in now just how aware she was of that and how she very smoothly showed it off. He snorted softly but not quiet enough that she wouldn’t hear. Not wanting to be caught quite literally looking down at her ass, Vandrad quickly turned his attention to the wall, as if that was a more acceptable direction to be staring in. Luckily for him, it was only a few seconds later that they came out from the tunnel and emerged in a massive cavern. And it was absolutely filled with plundered treasure. Gold, silver, steel, jewels – anything that people had heard about pirates had been taken and piled together all over the cacophonous room.

"Tsk. Leave it to a bunch of shit-for-brains pirates to gather all of their loot and not spend it all,” Vandrad commented as he walked up to a pile of gold and kicked a few pieces around idly. "No better than packrats.” He didn’t have much respect for pirates anyways but ones that didn’t even attempt to spend their treasure? They had all deserved to die horribly as far as he was concerned. He crouched down, sorting through the trinkets in almost morbid curiosity as Mercury focused on the glimmering bulbs that hovered about the place. The Prince hadn’t noticed them yet, far too busy picking up gold pans, coins and trinkets and scowling at each discovered piece.

It wasn’t until the lightning in the room took a crimson turn that his gaze lifted up, to find her looking at the swiftly changing bulbs. "Oh good, you made them angry,” he remarked off-handedly, tucking his arms against his sides and quickly changing back to his Empowered form. He stepped up to stand beside her as the new version of pirates began to take form. They were armed now, the details of their spectral selves finer as well. These ghosts had a bit more too them, charging towards the pair with expert precision. Mercury switched the setting on her gun and launched a blast that shook the cavern, forcing the ghosts to stumble backwards from the impact.

Then she put forth a challenge to him. He snorted and took a step forward… before he put his hand on her chest and pushed her back against the wall. His other hand opened up, revealing a glowing white ball of energy. He threw it up towards the top of the cave, the bright orb shimmering as it rose towards the stalactites hanging off the ceiling. It was a pretty display; one that took the attention of the ghosts for a moment. It was just enough of a distraction before the ball ignited, exploding in a shower of energy pellets that quickly began to rain back down at dangerous speeds. The spirits had a moment to figure out what was about to happen before the bullets began to pelt and carve through their ethereal forms. Their cries of pain and agony reverberated off of the cavern walls, ringing in tandem with the sound of the magic pellets striking and melting the gold in the immediate area. And still Vandrad held Mercury in place, keeping his gaze on hers as the brilliant display poured from the ceiling just over his shoulder.

Once the spell had run its course, the entire cavern fell silent. The Prince turned slightly to look over his shoulder, looking for a sign that any of the ghosts had survived the ordeal. But there was nothing left save for the smoking piles of metal that had been broken down by the heat of the attack. With a bemused smirk, he turned to look at her again, finally lifting his hand from her chest so that she could move freely. "Looks like I win then,” he observed smugly. "I’ll let you think on my prize while we get out of this droll place.”

“Oh, he’s sassy now,” she remarked with teasing humor. His words were harsh, but it tone was decidedly less so than it had been before the fighting started. It seemed he was actually playing with her, perhaps even flirting back a bit despite his claim that looking was all she was ever going to get to do. “Alright, killer, you’re on. Challenge accepted.” Mercury glanced back at him to give him a cheeky smirk when he snorted, thinking it was his response to her comment, only to find that he was rather conspicuously looking anywhere but at her. Curious.

She wouldn’t have much time to ponder it before they were in the cavern and gazing upon the hoards of treasure and trinkets. He took up digging through these while she focused on the orbs, but it wasn’t long before she’d set them off. “Oh, don’t sound so disappointed,” she playfully remarked as he turned his transformation back on and came to stand beside her, braced for a new fight. “I know what your kink is now. You should be thanking me.”

As the ghosts recovered from her stun blast, Mercury posed her challenge and Vandrad rose to greet it with a vengeance. She didn’t even have a chance to fire off a shot before she found his hand very rudely, and almost intimately, shoving her back against a wall by her chest. The Xocili’s ever present smirk finally wiped from her face, replaced with pure surprise. He simply stared at her as he blindly shot a blast up at the stalactites on the ceiling, causing them to rip violently from the cavern and pelt the entire group of ghosts below.

She, on the other hand, watched the perfect display of carnage just over his shoulder with narrowed, attentive eyes. As the dust and gold settled, Mercury could clearly see that he had wiped out every single ghost with a single shot. Slowly her emerald gaze flicked back to his, her face a serious mask that was betrayed by the twinkling of mirth in her stare that not even he could miss. “Now that was just unsportsmanlike,” she chastised him, her smirk returning ever so slightly.

There was no effort on her part to stop him from keeping her pinned against the wall. If anything, she looked like she was quite enjoying herself. He did pull his hand away, chirping quite smugly about having earned himself a prize. Her grin returned in full. “Oh, I get to decide that, do I? That’s dangerous territory you’re treading in. You may regret giving me that kind of power.” There was a suggestiveness to her tone, though whether or not she was serious or joking was entirely up for debate.

While his mind was on leaving, hers was finally on the treasure itself. “What, you don’t want to take any of this with you?” she asked him, sizing up the state of what was left in the wake of his attack. Half of it was melted, which wasn’t really an issue with Mercury around. Not that he knew that, of course. “The clients don’t want it, and it would be a shame to let it continue to sit and gather dust. A bit of bribing money goes a long way to hunting down people and information. Just a thought.”

She flashed him a knowing smirk, and it was then that she felt it: another cold spot coalescing behind her, further into the cavern toward the center of the piles. A new ghost formed, this one much bigger and much more threatening looking than any of those that had come before. It had a skeletal face and a sword in each hand, with the full regalia of finely crafted robes. Power oozed from him, marking this singular ghost as the most dangerous of all that had encountered so far. There was no mistake: This particular ghost had been the captain, and he was without a doubt going to take more than one hit to go down.

A devious little grin lit her face, and without turning to look at Vandrad she tapped into her magic for the first time on their little quest. Flicking her wrist upward, all the melted gold rushed in a liquid wave up toward the ceiling, bolting itself firmly from top to bottom, wall to wall, until a grated barrier of solid gold bars blocked any chance Vandrad would have had to engage the creature in a fight. All he’d be able to do is watch as the captain summoned even more ghosts to threaten her with. Turning to Vandrad, she crooned at him through the bars, “It’s only polite when a man blows his load first for the woman to get her turn after.”

He had forced her to stand there and watch as he annihilated almost an entire crew’s worth of pirates, and now she was going to make him watch as she played with the deadliest one of them all. Turn about was fair play. And hell, if he was going to show off, then she would do.

The smaller ghosts rushed at her. Without looking away from her partner, she used her sensors to determine their exact locations behind her. Aiming her pistol seemingly blindly behind her, two of the three ghost went down with perfectly aimed chest shots. Smirking smugly at Vandrad, she rested the gun on her shoulder as though she were letting her guard down and oblivious to the third ghost. Right when it was about to tackle her, however, she released the lever on her weapon that kept it in pistol form, and the intricately curved blade of a long sword snapped out over her shoulder. The third ghost, unable to avoid it in time, impaled itself right on the weapon and burst into a cloud of ethereal dust that blew through the grate to Vandrad.

Finally, she turned and faced the captain again. “Alright, big boy, looks like it’s just you and me.” Bracing herself to run, a dozen or so spikes grew from the soles of her shoes. They were small enough that Vandrad probably wouldn’t even notice them, but she didn’t need him to. All she needed was the boost of speed they would grant her.

Brandishing her gun that was now a sword, she practically exploded toward the captain who raised both his weapons and bore them down on her in a powerful, overhead swing. Mercury dropped to her side and skid effortlessly along the ground under his legs, slicing one as she slid by even as his own swords bashed uselessly on the ground where she’d been standing before. He turned to redirect his attack behind him, but Mercy was already lifted to parry the attack, deflecting his first blade harmlessly to the side while she danced gracefully out of the way of his follow up swing.

Using her magic subtly to keep the treasure from giving way under her feet, she leaped up the side of one of the piles and back flipped over him as he wildly swung his weapons after her, slicing gold rather than flesh or bone. He was quick to spin again, both blades once more careening down on her in tandem but she lifted her own with her free hand supporting the back of the blade at the tip, and caught them both with much more strength than a woman of her petite stature should have been capable of. With a wicked grin, she overpowered the much larger creature and shoved his swords back so hard that he stumbled.

She spun in the direction of her push, using the momentum to torque her body around and land a wicked gash across the ghost captain’s chest, which was quickly followed by a second one as whipped the weapon back around in the other direction. The ghost was furious with her now, bringing both blades in the bare on either side of her like he was fixing to smash her between them. Mercy she lifted on her right side while on her left she simply moved to block the swing with her arm, tapping into her power enough to turn her flesh hard as steel.

Mercury stood her ground, keeping both swords at bay with her arms long enough to analyze the captain with a devious smirk. She honestly hadn’t been sure whether or not the ethereal sword would pass through her, but it seemed that her connection with metal transcended the gap between the material and spectral worlds. That interested her greatly. Was there a way she could make his body solid enough for her to attack like Vandrad could? Only one way to find out.

Flicking a switch on Mercy, the weapon burst into an electric charge that jumped to the ghost’s sword and then to the rest of his body long before he had the chance to react to it. His entire form seized and he tried to back away, but she had already hooked one of his arms under hers. Yanking him toward her to pull him off balance, she kicked his feet out from under him and down he tumbled. As he fell past, she utilized one more precise swing to cleanly behead him. The still electrified head rolled along the ground and stopped just a few feet away from Vandrad on the other side of the grate where it poofed into nothingness once and for all.

Resting her sword back on her shoulder, she grinned wickedly at her partner. “And you wanted to leave…”

His remark, albeit slight flirtation, hadn’t intended to be a challenge to the woman. To Vandrad, it had been nothing more than a solid fact. And yet, she had taken it as a goal to rise up and meet and he couldn’t be bothered to correct her. If she tried anything, he would simply correct her boldness so the same mistake didn’t happen again. Strong or not, no one touched the Prince unless he gave explicit permission. But as long as she held herself to staying out of his personal space without invitation, she could assume whatever she wanted. It was amusing to say the least to think she could overwhelm him enough to do what she wanted.

As they entered the cavern and as Mercury accidentally set off the ghostly lights, his remark about her making them angry earned him a playful retort, the woman claiming to know what his ‘kink’ was now. He gave her a sideways glance, as if the very notion of her knowing anything bored him to his core. And perhaps that was why, when the time to join in the fight began, he turned and pressed her up against the cavern walls. Then again, it could simply be just him wanting to show off a little bit. Vandrad never pretended he didn’t revel in his own strength and was more than willing to showcase it for anyone that was nearby. And despite most likely containing the strength to push his hand off of her, she seemed more settled in simply watching the light show behind him. But he did take pride in the fact that he had finally wiped away the cocky smirk from her face as she looked more surprised than anything. And as the carnage came to an end, he wouldn’t miss the flickering amusement in her eyes, though her face remained dead panned.

She commented on his unsportsmanlike behavior, though her tone betrayed just how entertained she truly was. And perhaps it was the feeling of fresh devastation and victory but Vandrad decided to play into her little game. "Was it now? Because here I thought a wizard such as yourself would surely possess the strength to get my hand off of her if she truly desired.” He pressed his hand against her just a bit more; not enough to cause any damage but enough that she could fully feel the weight of his palm and fingers. He even leaned in a bit closer; not as close as he had been when he threatened her but enough that the distance could only be measured in inches. "What was it you said? I know your kink now,” he spoke to her through a grinning smirk, clearly quite proud of himself.

She replied to his comment about the prize, warning him that leaving it up to her was foraging in dangerous territory. "You’re the one that put the challenge forth. Seems only fair you get to name the prize… since you didn’t get to participate,” he cast over his shoulder at her, chuckling softly to himself. For the first time since he’d met her, only an hour or so ago, he was finally getting the upper hand. Mixing that with the adrenaline of fighting and Vandrad was finally starting to feel good. She seemed surprised that he didn’t want to take any of the treasure that hadn’t fully melted in his tumultuous attack. "If you think the villagers have no intention of coming here to claim the treasure after we leave, you haven’t thought this through,” he said with a scoff, passing by a pile of golden relics and giving them a kick. "Besides, I didn’t come here for ill-begotten treasure. Do what you want with it, I couldn’t care less. I have my own means of getting information.” There was also the fact that he had plenty of jewel if he ever needed it. Bribing people with pirate treasure wasn’t necessary.

And that should have been the end of it. The pirates were defeated and now there was only heading back to town and telling the client that the job was complete. But before he got even a couple more steps towards the tunnel, he heard the sound of the air moving yet again. A single brow raised, he turned slowly and watched as yet another ghost appeared – this one completely skeletal and absolutely brimming with power – much more than any of the other pirates had. His mouth spread open into a grin once more as excitement rose in his core. "Excellent. A real challenge,” he said hissed with glee as he began his march towards the newly formed captain of the pirates.

All of a sudden, the gold that he had melted down surged upwards, combining into a singular wave. He took a step back, his transformation overtaking him as he prepared for this surprise attack. But the gold latched onto the uneven surface of the ceiling as well as the floors and walls, separating enough to create literal bars. It only took him a beat to realize that this wasn’t the ghost captain’s doing – it was hers. And she only made it worse but turning to face him and teasing him about his predicament. "How dare you…” he growled between clenched teeth, ramming his fist against the nearest bar and denting it temporarily. As the skeleton ghost brought forth shipmates to aid him, it seemed she had ever intention of showing just how capable she was as well.

In truth, Vandrad could most likely tap into his magic and zip past the bars to join the battle. It wouldn’t be easy but if he put everything into it, it was possible. But instead of circumventing his temporary prison, his Empowerment faded from him and he loosened up. As he set his arms over his chest and seemed content to take the role of audience, he watched as her pistol let loose two shots and instantly defeated two ghosts without her even looking. The third ghost advanced on her, her smugness making her seem like she had assumed victory foolishly. But he remained silent, neither warning her nor showing any surprise when her pistol unfolded itself into a marvelously formed blade, pointed right at the charging spirit and impaling itself on her weapon. He glanced at the sword and snorted, the only sign of interest he deigned show her. It was a neat trick, he had to admit… but he only did so within the confines of his own mind. He wouldn’t give her the satisfaction.

With the lackeys handled, Mercury turned and charged the captain, hooting out her excitement over the prospect. As she engaged him, Vandrad simply remained where he was, an ever watchful eye upon her performance. He had been right; the way that she moved proved just how well trained she was. And she was well practiced with her weapon as well, utilizing it naturally as an extension of her own arm. He hated to even think it but she was proving herself quite impressive. She countered, parried and kept the pressure on the powerful specter, using the environment to her advantage. The only spot of danger she experienced was when the ghost brought his swords at her from both sides, attempting to pincer her between the sharp edges. Her sword came up to block one and then… her arm the other? What seemed like a foolish way to get one’s arm cut off proved to be the perfect defense as her arm blocked the entirety of the attack.

Control of metal; it made sense now. The way she was able to manipulate the gold and now this. The pair stood in place for a moment before Mercury activated her weapon once more, generating electric energy that leapt from her weapon to the ghost’s. Much like the first specter they had encountered, the captain was completely stunned as the currents coursed through his ethereal body. This gave her just the opening to pull him off guard, knock him down and deliver a swift and divorcing slice to the spirit’s neck. His head bounced and rolled on the ground, coming to a stop with its eyes staring right at Vandrad. And then in a moment later it had faded away.

Well, it wasn’t quite auspicious for the Prince to be wearing a tight jumpsuit at that moment, though the showcase of how impressed he was didn’t seem to register. Instead his eyes flickered up from the spot where the head had just came to rest and met the Silver Wolf wizard’s gaze, her smug grin back. His mouth churned behind his lips, his jaw tightening as he attempted to think of some kind of retort. When none came, there was only one thing he could say. "Tsk.” And like that, he turned and headed back towards the tunnel, their venture here now officially over.

Vandrad was so delightfully angry at her, and not just that. With the shadows in the cavern and the bars partially blocking her vision, she didn’t get a glimpse of exactly how frustrated he was until he turned, unable to give her any sort of comment on her performance. Unsure of whether she was seeing things or not, Mercury quickly swapped her eyes to infrared. Sure enough, his entire body was warm from the energy he had been exerting, but the spot just below his belt was absolutely radiating compared to the rest of him.

With his back turned to her, he didn’t see her grin spread. A part of her wanted oh so badly to call him out on it, to humiliate him just a bit, but she’d already done that plenty for today. Clearly he was ready to be done with this mission and with her. That was fine. Mercury was a patient woman, and unfortunately for Vandrad she had already decided that they were going to see each other again, probably much sooner than he wanted.

She opened a space enough in the grate to allow her to walk through before sealing it back up again. If Vandrad didn’t want any of it, Mercury certainly wasn’t going to get it go to waste. She could easily get every bit of treasure out of there quicker and easier than the clients could, and fully intended to since they had made it very clear the hoard was up for grabs. Once she and Vandrad confirmed with the clients that the job was done, the two of them would probably part ways and she could come straight back here to get everything shipped back to Silver Wolf.

And then, it would be to work researching as much as she could about her new best friend...
