Flat, rocky earth beneath the sweaty foot soles of officers in uniform. A hot summerlike sun burning the ground beneath it even though it was spring. The distant, thunderous roar of a waterfall crashing into the pool below and pulsating with eels and the like. It was much like a textbook image of some boot camp—but it wasn't. There were small packs of men and women who crowded against a cliffside, peering over it with some eyes in awe and others ominously fixed. But all of them were careful not to lose their step. Each of these persons-in-uniform wielded distinct pendants to the Rune Knights, all of them officers in both their Combat Corps and Special Operations divisions. They were certainly far from Era, their main headquarters, so one might've asked why these officers congregated here on such a blistering hot day?

The answer was simplistic but cruel, still. Their commanding officers had organized the eventual inclusion of squadrons but needed, like all things, to put it through trials, and it just so happened that the redheaded Private Chiyuki Suzuki and a handful of other Rune Knight officers were chosen for the trial. But it wasn't as simple as that. The objective was to see how officers from S.O (Special Operations) and C.C (Combat Corps) could cooperate together in integrated teams. They would scale and tread through the Serene Cliffs and face against its natural hazards to best view this. Everyone was given standard equipment, and the trials were just about to begin.

Doppo wasn't happy to have been picked for an all-day assignment but wasn't quite unhappy either. In fact, he was more anxious than anything. Recently, had had taken up an interest in cyber-suits, or suits that were so technologically advanced that they were able to be compared with most magics. He ended up being able to acquire the parts to build one as best he could, and today was a perfect opportunity to test it out. Having grown up in Motor City, he was confident that there was nothing essentially wrong about the suit, but he was anxious anyway. He also acquired an arsenal of weapons to pick from, but he geared it all in a way that it'd be more supportive than anything else. He greatly began to anticipate the results.

Meanwhile, he stood there in his uniform, waiting for instruction. Out of about two dozen men and women, they were all organized into groups of three or four, give or take. His face drooped like the sun was melting it, and sighed deeply into the hot spring air. It didn't take long before the knights began to make a competition out of it—who would be the first squadron to get to destination? Who'd be the last? Who'd defeat the most obstacles? Doppo wasn't very competitive himself, but he didn't dislike watching competition. Or, so he thought.

Like many instances, the officers who were overseeing the trials always enjoyed a good show, so one of them offered a handsome some of money to whichever squadron who won any of those titles. Suddenly, the chitchat became thunderous roars of lionlike war cries. Doppo watched in awe of both them and and reward. He looked to his squadron and pointed to the boasting men and women, ". . . So . . .?" he rumbled. He could never deny money from anyone, you know! He could buy himself two new sweaters with that pay, he'd think!

"Two minutes until we begin. Get ready!" some woman over a loudspeaker announced. Many of the squadrons began to get into their starting positions like track runners at the beginning of a race. Doppo watched them all with nonchalance.

Post by Shane Stern 27th April 2019, 10:41 pm

Brows furrowed as he shielded his eyes from the blinding sun, Shane looked around him with a frown. There was nothing but flatland as far as he could see, the shimmering waves of heat reflected back from the ground causing a slight distortion to his view as he turned his head left and right to watch the proceedings. Rune Knights were everywhere on the barren landscape, grouped together with the general attention being paid to a makeshift stage to one side of the site, while they mingled around. The entirety of the Rune Knights here was either of the Combat Corps or the Special Ops, two groups of soldiers entrusted with different missions.

As far as he understood, they were merely specialized branches of the Rune Knights, without any notion of one being superior to the other. While in the past, missions had been carried out by a full team of members from the same division, the higher ups were finally willing to explore the feasibility of a cross-division team. A combination of Combat Corps and Special Ops personnel within a squad. Personally, Shane thought it would be a more efficient way, but anything new was still required to be tested out before applied to the field.

And this gathering here today was for that exact purpose. An obstacle course where they had to navigate as a squad, complimenting each other’s strength and compensating for the weaknesses. The higher ups had set it up to be a competition among multiple teams and as the announcement for the reward to the winner came up, the shouts and hurrahs arrived reached a booming crescendo. The atmosphere was infectious and Shane found himself grinning as well from the energy that was pouring out of everyone.

The only other eye-catching person in his squad was a redhead who, despite the raucous atmosphere, was appearing to be very calm. Shane recognized him from the invasion on the Rune Knight headquarters. He had been one of the few he had fought alongside. The silver-haired mage took it on himself to reply his question.

“So, we win this,” Shane replied in equal measure, in a very casual tone. “I don’t know if you remember, but we’ve met during the whole HQ invasion thing. I’m Shane Stern, Spec Ops.”

As they completed their introductions, Shane looked around again, observing the other squads taking up their starting positions. All of them were raring to go, like racehorses waiting to be released from their starting cages, ever eager to dash forward. The higher ups had mentioned that it was allowed for squads to deny other squads from finishing the challenge, that it was more than just a time-based event but lethal force was not allowed.

“Any ideas on how we are gonna proceed with winning this?”

There were two minutes left before the trial began and the people within his compact squadron briefly introduced themselves with particularly standard, common names. Although he had never met them before and couldn't recall any time where he had seen them, they had a familiar air about them. He was sure to have been in a room with them or something at some point, especially the silver-haired man next to them. Chiyuki remembered him as Blayne Burn, but he was sure that he was incorrect—he always was with names.

The grin that spread across the silver-haired man's face was almost as wildly contagious as the thunderous roars in the background, the rest of their squadron unable to help but smile just as pleasantly. Chiyuki didn't smile but felt lighter in spirit. The man introduced himself as Shane Stern from S.O, but like usual, Chiyuki only heard something along the lines of Sheldon Stern. He dipped his head in greeting, "Chiyuki Suzuki from Combat Corps. . . pleasure, Sheldon." he sighed his words as if mustering strength from his throat into soft, weary undertones and didn't say much else from that. But when Sheldon mentioned the chaotic invasion from some months ago, his fluffy silver mane suddenly became a vivid memory in his head. Why yes, it was that man who had a coterie of Rune Knights following him in the building, and Chiyuki was almost certain that he was the very same man who ordered tossing prisoners back into cells that were beginning to cave in. Every time he remembered the command he suddenly felt bitter, bewildered, and mildly infuriated at the irresponsibility and rashness of the order, but he could never figure out who ordered such things until now. Chiyuki was sure to note that Sheldon may not have the clearest of heads in high-pressure situations but only brushed off the thought once realizing who he was. "Mm-hm. . ." the redhead only nodded when Sheldon brought up the chaotic night and said nothing else to acknowledge it. In fact, he hardly acknowledged anything—his eyes were only half-open and he looked as he was dozing right then and there, and to a certain extent, he tried.

They still had a little under two minutes to prepare, and for this particular group of squadrons, it was nothing at all to devise a plan. Again, Chiyuki wasn't a particularly competitive person, but hearing the chatter and seeing the grins that swept the expressions of most around him made him feel obligated to participate. Really, there was no reason not to. His pretty blue eyes gazed over the flat horizon, with only a few rigid lumps in the distance. His eyes narrowed and throat heaved a sigh, pointing lazily to that horizon, "Just run. . . that way and hope for the best, right?" he suggested as more of a rhetorical question. It might've been a foolish answer to most, but it seemed that that was all his and all the other squadrons could do.

Post by Shane Stern 2nd May 2019, 6:16 pm

Shane wasn’t a really particular person that he would mind being called the wrong name if the person was doing it accidentally. In fact, he had been called plenty of times by a variety of variations on his name ranging from Shen to Shawn. And he decided to just play along with the guy, to see if he was doing it on purpose or he really had such a hard time remembering names.

“Nice to meet you too, Suzy,” Shane replied to the redhead and then nodded in response to the other two members of their team. It was a well-balanced squad in terms of their divisions, two from the Spec Ops and two from Combat Corps. But as far as how their magic would work in relation to each other’s or even basic cooperation, there was more to be seen. A bang reverberated through the entire landscape as the cheering suddenly came to a halt. Discipline had overtaken all the excitement of the moment, changing everyone into professionals once again.

The obstacles course was a gargantuan maze made entirely out of gray earth. The walls stood as high as fifty feet into the air and there were ten entrances that Shane could make out from where he stood. The squads could choose which entrance to take.

“Let’s go,” Shane suggested as they moved randomly towards one of the entrances. However, before they entered, Shane had purposely lagged behind the squad. A magic circle appeared in his palm and he flung two beams of light into the air. One was crimson while the other neon green. And then he followed his squad into the maze.

Up in the air, the two beams of light flashed into two winged creatures, large dragon-like creatures of folklore and legends, readily injecting fear into the wicked or inspiring courage in the brave, should they be seen. The crimson light had manifested into a red plated, winged wyvern which resembled a dragon in every aspect while the green light gave birth to a black scaled, winged wyvern as well with neon green streaks running through its body. It resembled a winged insect more than a dragon, but looks ferociously dangerous as well.

The two wyverns parted ways, snorting at each other but maintaining a certain sense of camaraderie despite their previous conflicts. On the ground, Shane’s eyes glowed red and then green for a second, easily missed by anyone not paying attention. The connection between the wyverns and him were complete. It was extremely disconcerting at first when he switched between the different views in only one eye, but if they were to come out of this maze as the winner, he would have to deal with it soon.

In the entire squad, Chiyuki was the only person who knew what he was doing and Shane tapped him on the shoulder when they reached a T-junction.

“Suzy, I’ve got aerial support and a bird’s eye view of the maze. We will meet with two teams currently battling it out if we go left. Going to the right will require us to take a detour around the outer wall of the maze before we can get back into the inner layers. Your call."

The redhead nodded when Sheldon requited his delights and flinched painfully when realizing what he had just called him. His name was not Suzy, it was Chiyuki Suzuki! Was it really so hard to remember? The thought annoyed him, but the signal to begin had become present before Doppo could do anything about it. But even if the signal didn't happen and there was all the time in the world, there was a large chance that he wouldn't have done anything regardless and would've instead cursed underneath his breath or correct him quietly enough for no one but himself to hear.

By the time the exercise had started, Doppo had been dressed from head to toe in his cyber-suit in what seemed to be the blink of an eye. Suddenly he was covered in hard, sturdy black articles with a hood veiling his helmet. There was a utility belt around his hips, where it should be, and a strap that went from his right shoulder to his left hip that looked equally as equipped with tools. Overall, it was a very ominous and daunting appearance that he had changed into in a matter of milliseconds, fitting for the equally ominous and unfriendly Doppo.

Even though they were running, Doppo and Sheldon had somehow managed to find themselves behind the group anyway, watching the backs of their fellowmen-in-uniform dart excitedly in front of them without looking back.

When Sheldon commented and briefed Doppo on what was happening, the redhead continued to look straight ahead to mull over their options in silence. The best option was to take the detour if they wanted to complete the exercise with the least resistance, and the other option was. . . well, what did it matter if the best option was already so doable? There was no real reason to fight if they could avoid it, and in an exercise like this, speed was what counted. Yes, speed was what counted. So obviously, the best option was not the right, but the left.

His gaze broke away from the sky in thought, quickly peeking to both his left and right before pointing towards the left without enthusiasm, ". . . This way." Doppo began to steer himself left until the thunderous sounds of bodies slamming and spells being cast could be felt in the rumbles of the ground. Sheldon was right, there really were two teams duking it out over here! Of course, Doppo never doubted him.

There was about six of them total, Doppo suspecting that some of them may not have been in view or been completely out of this situation entirely. Briskly and with urgency, he crouched and hugged the large green walls in search of cover from their sight. He didn't tell Sheldon what he was doing even if it was pretty obvious that he was observing the situation and simply watched in silence.

When the body of a girl went flying completely in the opposite direction from whence they came, Doppo's eyes followed the girl through his helmet and whistled pretentiously, ". . . Wonder if she's conscious. . ." he mentioned quietly.

Post by Shane Stern 24th June 2019, 11:22 pm

His head dipped slightly in a nod as Chiyuki took the lead to the left, straight into the fray. Personally it would have been his choice too, but he had never expected it from Chiyuki. From their first run-in at the Rune Knights HQ, it seemed that the man was capable of making more rational decisions and would often weigh out risks first. Regardless, that was that, nothing to waste his time thinking about further. He needed his mind to focus on the matter at hand.

They approached the ongoing battle, blasts of magic impacting against the walls and ground shaking the entire section of the maze. Despite choosing this route, the squad was keeping it cautious, silently edging over the walls to observe the battle between two squads. There was insufficient space for all of them to get a good view, and Shane withdrew to the wall. Closing his eyes, he then reopened, only for both his eyes to glow a dark crimson. He now had an aerial view of the entire maze, a few hundred feet above the obstacle course.

“What do you see?” a gravelly voice sounded in Shane’s mind.

“I need you to fly lower, hover above my location. I need to see the battle,” Shane replied through their mental link. At his instructions, the large red wyvern which had been soaring above the obstacle course in a clockwise direction, at opposite sides of the circular orbit with the other wyvern, began to dip lower and then spread out his wings wide to stop his descent, resuming its soaring state. The wyvern’s huge form cast a shadow on the particular area of the maze, but the people beneath were too occupied to notice.

Shane watched from an aerial perspective. A female Rune Knight had been sent flying out of the group combat, hit directly in the face but a misfired spell from her own teammate. The girl crumpled against the wall, unconscious while the battle raged on. Not wanting to wait for the battle to end and also not knowing Chiyuki’s intention for waiting, Shane terminated his mental link with the red wyvern, which resumed its higher altitude, keeping an eye on the whole maze.

Inhaling and exhaling deeply the moment the link was broken, Shane took a second to reorient his senses and then spoke to the team.

“I’m going to try something. They will most likely be stunned from this, but I need you guys to take care of the ones that don’t,” the silver-haired Rune Knight said to his team in an exhausted tone before closing his eyes. Shane then tried again to link with the other wyvern he had summoned. His eyes were luminous green this time, the moment he connected with the insect-like wyvern.

“What do you want?!!!” the wyvern boomed. It was particularly hostile against Shane, but had no means of resistance due to their summoning pact. Unlike the red wyvern, this particular one had submitted unwillingly to Shane, hence the aggression. But Shane chose to ignore it. He would find the time to slowly thrash it out with this testy guy after this test.

“You’re gonna like this. You see that two groups fighting in front of me? I want you to swoop down and shower them with lightning. Just enough to stun them,” Shane ordered.

“Heh, that’s more like it,” the green wyvern scoffed before carrying out the orders. Unlike the red wyvern’s gentle descent, the green one was in full attack mode. With a flap of its wings to break out of its soar, the green wyvern then angled his body downwards, wings tucked to his side as he divebombed towards the ground. Green lightning crackled around his body, most prominently his wings, and at the very last moment, the green wyvern fully extended his wings, arresting his fall and subsequently raining down bolts of green lightning on the Rune Knights locked in combat.

Boom after boom erupted in the section of the maze on the side of the wall as they were bombarded. Shane watched through the green wyvern’s eyes as the beast pulled up from its dive before making a turn in the air and swooped back down. But this time, it was merely for surveillance. The sudden onslaught had managed to take out a few of them, but there were still three more Rune Knights that were either lucky or possessed quick reflexes still standing. The rest were all on the ground, remnants of the lightning bolts crackling through their bodies.

“Go go go!” Shane urged the moment he returned from the mental link. He stumbled backwards from the mental strain, leaning against the wall for support before straightening back up to join his squad.

    Badaboom! Baroom! Bwoom!

While Doppo was carefully watching the people battle among each other, Sheldon wasted no time to enter the fray in his way. Several bolts of green lightning struck this crowd with a thunderous entrance, men and women wailing as it stunned them. The others in their squad seemed as shocked as the people being shocked, but Doppo was visibly unimpressed. If it meant anything to Sheldon, he might've liked to know that the redhead thought it was a nice show, but he would never be able to tell by looking at him.

    "Go! Go! Go!"

That was what Sheldon said and that was what the remaining members of their squad did. But Doppo, on the other hand, was stalking over on the sidelines, walking with his body close to the ground as if he were trying to make himself invisible. He kept away from his squadron and found a place not too far from where they had been originally observing the feud. It was a pile of moss-covered stone debris that stacked over itself enough to make something of a perch. A perch in the sense that you could climb it and see many more things from that height than you could from down below. It wasn't perfect, but one of the great things about becoming a Rune Knight was that you developed into a person who cared less and less about what was given to you and instead worked with what you had. So that is precisely what Doppo decided to do.

Doppo climbed this mossy stone perch and wasted no time in getting prepared to cover his teammates in the impending battle with the three remaining mages on the battlefield. He couldn't tell who was teamed up with who because all three of them came charging at his squad. The conflict before seemed to have vanished and no longer mattered since all eyes were tied around the approaching two knights in his squadron.

The hooded redhead noticed this immediately, gingerly crouching onto the rocks and preparing something. There was nothing in his hands and yet he'd hold them in place as if he were holding something heavy and long. His dominant hand was in front of his chest and his other being far ahead. It looked as if he were aiming something at those mages in particular despite nothing being there. But there was something there as the miliseconds passed, and what appeared in between his fingers was a rifle! It wasn't anything excessively large or long like a sniper would use, but enough for it to be made clear that this was intended to be fired from a distance. It had no scope since, being so close to the group despite the distance he created, it wasn't needed. The rifle fits perfectly into how he positioned his hands, making the posture before suddenly make more sense. It felt natural and effective despite it being his first time actually using it.

For the first few collisions, Doppo didn't say or do anything but watch it all unfold. His teammates hurled some spells at the trio of mages, and said mages would evade, hurl some spells at them, and his teammates would do the same. This continued for some few seconds until one of the three mages had finally spotted an opening.

This mage was primarily that on the "punchy" side and, when one of their teammates tripped over themselves whilst evading, grinned triumphantly in seeing the opportunity. "I've got you now, brace yourself!!" said the mage, hurling his fist at the downed one as if his life depended on it.

    Poomb! Poomb!

The sound of two bullets bursting from Doppo's rifle fired.

    Thud!

The mage that would suddenly try to strike the other with his fist had fallen face-first into the ground. He had been knocked unconscious. In fact, he was so unconscious that his eyes had rolled into the back of his head, and only the red, veiny whites of his eyes could be seen. For a moment, this stunned the remaining two mages who looked over to the perched Doppo, horrified and somewhat enraged.

Doppo said nothing and began to quietly reload his rifle.

Post by Shane Stern 16th August 2019, 3:08 am

It didn’t escape Shane’s notice that Suzy had stayed back. A cursory glance told him that his squad member probably had a plan of his own, with him moving purposefully and around the battle that would soon to erupt. Despite having only worked together once, Shane knew that the redheaded mage would have his own strategy to contribute to their battle. What really warranted his attention was the incoming team of three Rune Knights, the leftovers from Asthalos’ attack, the green lightning wyvern that had been summoned by Shane.

Charging straight into them with equal ferocity at the trio, Shane was engaging them in melee combat. Somehow one of the three were strong enough to take on his other squad members, forcing Shane to take two. The three of them traded blows, with Shane constantly on the move to keep the battle moving and to avoid giving them any opportunities, but as the exchange of blows continued on, the two opposing Rune Knights would find their fists start to sore as though they were punching at trees.

However, in this case, they were punching at scales. Scales of diamond-like shapes were layered upon Shane’s clothes, the toughness of the scales absorbing the impact. Aside from using the wyverns as summons, Shane was also capable of using them with Takeover magic, allowing him to take on their partial properties of the wyverns. Two loud report thundered out and Shane urgently looked in Doppo’s direction.

He was relieved when he recognized it was a rifle in the man’s hands as the latter began reloading with a lack of urgency. In the moment that Shane had been distracted the two Rune Knights attempted to clothesline him simultaneously. But a mental voice had warned him.

“Keep your eyes on the battle, Stern,” the red one growled lazily as he swept above the battlefield, casting a great shadow upon them.

“Thanks for the heads-up,” the Rune Knight replied gratefully, the scales extending from his upper arms down to his fingers, talons forming at his fingertips. Shane grabbed both their outstretched arms by the wrists with his clawed fingers, letting out a sly smile as the two of them were caught by surprise. Shane braced himself, still holding their two arms as they failed to stop their momentum and ran past him comically with only their lower body moving forward while their upper body jerked to a stop.

With a growl, Shane tightened his grip on their arms and lifted them up into the air before slamming them back down into the ground. His entire upper body was now covered in scales lined with yellow cracks, giving him a bestial appearance.

The other Rune Knights that had been shocked by Astalos’s rain of lightning never got up, succumbing for unconsciousness.

“No time to lose, let’s go. We got a race to win,” Shane called out towards Doppo. He was disregarding the two other members of his squad. They were out of their league, and all they had to do was make sure they could cooperate well with Shane and Doppo. As he said that, the larger of the two wyverns, the red one swooped down and landed behind Shane, tucking in its wings as it approached the team.

“Get on,” Shane said to Doppo. “You are going to need a better vantage point if you want to keep at using that weapon. He will carry you into the skies above us where you can provides us with better cover fire.”
